Is it cheaper to leave your electric heat running on a lower temp constantly, or on a high temp for less time?

Hi there,
I was wondering, is it cheaper to leave you heat on all day set at a lower temperature (ex.60 degrees) so your vents are often blowing out room temperature air, or is it cheaper to set the temp higher (ex. 75 degrees) for only an hour or so? It seems to me like if I set the temperature lower, making it so the air is blowing throughout the day it would cost more than if I just cranked it up to a higher heat for a short period of time.My house does not hold a good temperature for long as it is an older house and it is freezing outside. Just looking for some input, thanks!

Your best bet would be to improve the energy efficiency of your house. This would be the cheapest option in the long run.

In regards to your query. It is cheaper to run it at a high temperature for a shorter period. If you leave it on a low temperature you are still running the system all day and consuming energy (money) all day rather than just for an hour or so.

maximum if no longer all the potential you spent is finally grew to become into warmth - on condition that some hydrocarbons leave the chimney unburned, you have under one hundred% performance. yet you besides mght unfastened potential while warm smoke and steam leaves the chimney. it particularly is attainable that your heating device works extra suitable (enables much less potential to flee via way of the chimney) in case you shop the temperature as consistent as attainable. this would particularly count at this form of heating you have. in case you have electric heating, it particularly is not any longer a controversy and you will desire to easily shop your abode as chilly as is bearable for you, your pets, your flowers and the development and so on. yet another undertaking is that warmth gradients reason air to bypass which will subjectively be felt as decrease temperature. this could be a case for averting a too surprising heating in the morning.

If your house doesn't hold a temperature for long, then it won't help you to blast it on 75 for an hour. Keep it at a minimum temperature at least. This will help your pipes not freeze, also.
